Privacy Issues With Commercial Space Surveillance Systems
All of the industry statistics and reports show that adding a DVR video surveillance system to the security program for your commercial enterprise is a great idea. It is a proven fact that visible cameras offer both employees and customers peace of mind by providing tangible evidence that their safety is being assured. Visible cameras also act a very effective deterrent to any would be criminals on the premises- or employees who may have a proclivity to engage in misconduct when unobserved.
Live video feeds allows your security team to respond almost instantaneously to any situation, and the recorded data is legally admissible as evidence in a court of law- greatly assisting in capture and prosecution of the parties at fault after an event has occurred. With all of these advantages, you may feel like you’re ready to install surveillance cameras throughout your commercial premises right now- but there are a few things you will want to consider before you put those digital “eyes” into place.
Dealing With Employee Privacy
Before you install a DVR video security system in your commercial enterprise, you need to take some time to consider employee privacy. While video security systems can grant employees peace of mind in remote areas such as stairwells or parking garages, they can also cause potential stress in work areas. Because there are sensitivity issues surrounding the concept of employee privacy, there are certain laws that have been put into effect regarding video surveillance in the workplace:
*Hidden cameras: While there are a few situations in which covert surveillance is allowed, in general, you should always inform your employees that they are being monitored within the surveillance areas. Hidden cameras are not illegal, but deliberately lying or misleading employees about them is. In other words, you can’t tell your employees that they are not under surveillance when, in fact, they are. In most cases, keeping the fact that certain areas are being remotely monitored under wraps is also a big no-no. Some states have more rigorous disclosure laws than others, so be sure to check the laws in your locale.
*Intrusive Monitoring: You may not monitor employees in “private” areas, such as restrooms or changing rooms, or outside of the work place. There are also very specific restrictions and regulations for legally recording audio, so you will typically want to record a visual feed with no audio. By programming your cameras to monitor and record on a specific schedule, and keep your employees informed about it, you can reduce that risk of intruding on your employees’ personal interactions.
*Confidentiality: Other than criminal activity or misconduct, monitored behaviors revealing personal habits or relationships cannot become general knowledge through leaking of information of images from surveillance monitoring. Live and recorded video feeds should be viewable only to a select team of people who monitor it for security reasons. Video feeds should be stored for a specified and limited amount of time, unless an actual security event has occurred during monitoring. At that point, the recording should be viewed and released only to the personnel or authorities who will put it to legal use.
